“If you can’t find happiness where you are, where are you going to find it?”
With this Zen idea in my head, I began taking pictures around my yard during the spring of 2005. In the past, I have taken a lot of images inside the house, but not many from outside. I see this body of work as an outgrowth of my State Park series. As the yard came alive that spring, I found myself drawn to the light and the renewal of life in the yard. Rather than hopping in my car and racing across town to take pictures at Silver Sands, I leisurely strolled into the backyard within minutes of inspiration. Being able to respond to ever changing conditions in the yard, I felt a freedom to try new things. Through these images I have tried to explore new lighting situations, compositions and subject matters in an attempt to learn and grow photographically.
